The U.S. Department of Education (ED) issued DCL GEN-07-04, FP-07-08, and CB-0710 which announced the approved new Military Deferment Request form.

A provision was established in the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 (HERA) for a new military deferment for borrowers with loans made under FFEL, Direct Loan, and Perkins Loan programs. A borrower may defer repayment on eligible loans for up to three years while he or she is serving on active duty. Only loans that were first disbursed on or after July 1, 2001 are eligible for this new military deferment.

The new Military Deferment Request form may be made available to borrowers for immediate use. FFEL Program Participants and Perkins Loan schools are required to make the new Military Deferment Request form available to borrowers no later than October 1, 2007.
