Death, Disabilty and Bankruptcy in NYHELPs
Contact either HESC or Firstmark Services immediately to discuss your account if the student, borrower, or cosigner:
- has died;
- becomes totally and permanently disabled; or
- has filed for bankruptcy.

A NYHELPs loan may be discharged if while in school, the student dies or becomes totally and permanently disabled.
A NYHELPs loan may be discharged if the borrower dies while on active military duty.
If you file bankruptcy and you are able to prove undue hardship in court, your loan may be discharged.
