TAP Coach - Assistantships
Students enrolled in graduate studies may be awarded a teaching assistantship. According to section 145-2.1(a) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, “graduate assistantships . . .may . . be considered as contributing towards full-time or part-time study on an hour-for-hour equivalent basis, if the student effort required is the same as would be required for a credit-bearing course in conformity with subdivision (o) of section 50.1 of this Title, and if required or approved by the school, in a plan of study prefiled by the student with the school, as an integral part of the student’s program.”
Subdivision (o) defines a semester hour of credit as fifteen 50-minute hours of instruction and 30 hours of supplementary outside assignments. To comply with this provision, administrators of graduate studies should determine a credit equivalent value for the time committed to an assistantship and maintain a written record.
