For the past several years, HESC has streamlined the financial aid application process for your students by allowing them to sign an electronic Master Promissory Note, or e-MPN, online in minutes at hesc.org.

The step-by-step process is faster, more efficient and more accurate than the traditional paper Master Promissory Note.

No paper is required and edits are done as your students enter data, eliminating the need for you to follow up on incomplete fields. When your student completes the e-MPN, their loan is guaranteed instantly if their school certification is on file. HESC e-MPN process meets all federal requirements.

Your students begin the e-MPN process by visiting our home page at hesc.org and clicking on the hot link “Complete the e-MPN.”

Next, your students are taken to a screen giving them details on everything they’ll need to do to complete their e-MPN.

The next page that appears features instructions about the signing process, minimum hardware and software requirements, tips and troubleshooting in case they run into problems. Your students click this box to continue or they can exit the process.

On this screen for Stafford e-MPNs, your students can once again read the outline of the e-MPN process, and the terms and conditions so they understand their rights and responsibilities as borrowers. Every page also features the HESC privacy policy reassuring your students that their information always remains confidential and secure.

Next, your students read the Disclosure, which informs them they’re about to sign an electronic document. This page also tells students they can withdraw consent to complete the e-MPN and will need to complete a paper MPN instead. Once again, they check this box to continue. Here, as with all the screens, your students will receive an error message if they fail to check the box, reducing errors and expediting the process.

Here, your students give their consent to sign the e-MPN for a loan they must repay.

Your students view the Master Promissory Note and click “Agree” to accept its terms and conditions.

When your student clicks, confirm your identity they are instantly taken to the HESC PIN authentication system, to have their identity verified.

On this page your students confirm their identity by entering their User ID and PIN number. For first time users, there’s a link to register for their HESC PIN.

Once their identity is confirmed, they are seamlessly transferred back to HESC. If their school certification is on file, HESC informs them that their identity has been confirmed and displays their school and loan information.

If there is no school certification pending, your students are taken to a screen where they select their education level.

Now your students complete the e-MPN, which has data pre-filled, reducing errors and making the process easier. Your students must complete all fields with asterisks. Here, they see your school’s preferred lenders. Your school can choose its own lender lists and specify whether its order stays static or is random. Also, you can customize your lists for each education level and program type.

After completing their e-MPN, your students review their draft. If they haven’t entered the correct data, they can always go back and revise their note, but cannot change authenticated data.

Now, it’s time for your students to sign the e-MPN by typing their name all in capital letters. Before they sign, they can go over the note once again and review their rights and responsibilities.

On this final screen your students learn how to protect their computer so nobody else can access their information. Your students also have the option of printing the e-MPN then or at a later time.

Parents can easily complete the PLUS e-MPN at h-e-s-c.org. As with Stafford loans, the PLUS e-MPN ensures that borrowers understand terms and conditions, verifies their identity and returns them to HESC to complete the process. After the borrower reads the information, they can either click a button to start the process or return to view or print if they’ve previously signed their e-MPN.
