Thousands of students across the state do not apply for the financial aid they are entitled to receive. One common reason given for not completing and filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid – the FAFSA – is the student or family thinks they would not qualify; others think the form is too confusing or aren't prepared with the appropriate documentation.

January 25 - February 25, 2010 will be designated Student Financial Aid Awareness Month by Governor David Paterson. HESC and other key partners will engage in a campaign to inform and educate New York State students and families about all of the financial aid opportunities available to them and promote the completion of the most important tool in securing financial aid, the FAFSA.

A variety of events are being planned throughout the State, including regional assistance to complete the FAFSA, online and call-in FAFSA assistance days, Web tool kits on a designated HESC Web page and other outreach activities.

You can help get this important information to your college-bound students. Read the HESC High School Counselors’ E-News to stay up-to-date as plans take shape.
