Student TAP Coach - Accelerated Study
In certain circumstances, New York State Education Law permits you to receive an “accelerated” TAP payment, in addition to the regular annual award of two semester payments (or three quarter/trimester payments). Accelerated TAP awards can be for full-time study (enrollment in credit-bearing courses applicable to the students' program of study, for at least 12 semester hours ) or half-time study (enrollment in credit-bearing courses applicable to the students' program of study, for at least six but fewer than 12 semester hours). Accelerated TAP payments count against the four years of undergraduate TAP assistance permitted by Education Law.
To be eligible for an accelerated TAP payment--either a full-time or half-time award--you must be enrolled full time in the semester preceding the accelerated term and must also earn 24 semester hour credits or the equivalent (36 quarter credits) in the prior two semesters or the equivalent (three prior quarters/trimesters). The 24 semester hours must be credits earned at the same institution and must apply to your program of study. Transfer credits cannot be used to meet this requirement. If you change programs at your college, the 24 credits must apply to the program in which you were enrolled when the credits were earned.
To meet the 24-prior-credit requirement, you can include up to six non-credit hours of remedial study, three remedial hours per semester (2 non-credit remedial hours per quarter/trimester). Three remedial hours in each semester is the only permissible distribution; thus, if you took a total of six remedial hours in one semester, only three remedial hours will count toward the 24-credit requirement.
You must meet the 24-credit prior study requirement each time you seek an accelerated award.
Accelerated study eligibility at registered private business schools(a) Schools that teach three terms of 15 weeks or more in a year: to be eligible for a third term of TAP within a calendar year (accelerated study), you must successfully complete a total of 720 clock hours in two consecutive terms. This would generally result in 360 clock hours per term.
(b) Schools that teach four terms of at least 10 weeks and fewer than 15 weeks in a calendar year: to be eligible for a fourth term of TAP within a calendar year (accelerated study), you must successfully complete a total of 720 clock hours in three consecutive terms. This would generally be 240 clock hours per term.
