HESC's 5th Annual Symposium an Event to Be Remembered
Teresa Gehrer
On September 16 and 17, HESC hosted 160 colleagues at its 5th annual Symposium in Saratoga Springs. This year's broad focus, presentation variety, and speaker popularity contributed to the success of the event.
Symposium participants heard perspectives from both the Chancellor of SUNY, Dr. Nancy Zimpher, and Laura Anglin, the President of cIcu. Each offered insightful presentations focusing on the future and discussing the impact of public and private colleges and universities in New York. Both leaders stressed the importance of building relationships and partnerships between New York's colleges, community organizations, private businesses and government entities to reach common goals.
Participants also learned about strategies for creating more veteran-friendly campuses, and learned about benefits and services available to our veteran's returning from overseas. This dynamic session was sponsored by the NYS Division of Veterans Affairs, and featured Director and Retired Colonel James McDonough, and senior trainer, Andrew Davis.
Interesting research and statistical data about private loans as they relate to student aid administration was provided by Tim Ranzetta. Mr. Ranzetta is founder and CEO of Student Lending Analytics, a California-based company that is most recognized by college aid administrators for its robust and informative Web site and its "Student Lending Analytics” blog.
A thought-provoking presentation on the latest legislative guidance affecting student loans was lead by Jeff Noordhoek, President of Nelnet, Inc., a national leader in student loan servicing.
Participants also learned about helping students manage credit cards and credit card debt from Jennifer Trauman of Access Group, and were enlightened about best practices for managing the financial aid office from Dr. Janet Hunter, a consultant with Financial Aid Services (FAS). Finally, attendees also had the opportunity to hear from a panel of experts on How America Pays for College, the results of the Sallie Mae survey, conducted by Gallup.
Comments from Symposium participants have been extremely positive. Plans are currently being made for the 6th annual HESC Symposium in Saratoga Springs for 2010. We hope to see all of you there.
